In a world dominated by screens and keyboards, we’ve forgotten the simple, transformative act of putting pen to paper. But did you know that physically writing things down can unlock creativity and boost memory in ways typing can’t?
Writing by hand is more than just a nostalgic practice – it’s a proven tool for better thinking. Studies have shown that handwriting engages different parts of the brain, improving focus, comprehension, and creative flow.
Here’s how you can start reaping the benefits of handwriting:
Morning Journaling: Start your day by writing down your thoughts or plans. It helps you clarify your priorities for the day.
Brainstorm by Hand: Sketch out ideas or mind maps on paper to get your creative juices flowing.
Keep a Notebook Handy: Capture inspirations and insights as they come to you. There’s something magical about seeing your thoughts take shape on paper.
A few years ago, I worked as a digital court reporter while working towards my Bachelor’s degree online. During COVID, when everything shifted to remote work, I found myself spending over 12 hours a day in front of a computer. By the time I tried to transition into a creative mindset, I felt overwhelmed by anxiety and completely uninterested in spending even more time on my phone or laptop. It was nearly impossible to get any creative thoughts flowing effectively.
Typing felt efficient, but I often hit a wall. Switching to pen and paper made my ideas flow naturally and helped me reconnect with my creative process. Now, my notebook is my most trusted tool.
Sometimes, the simplest tools can make the biggest difference. Grab a pen, open your notebook, and see where your thoughts take you. Next week, I’ll share tips on finding inspiration in unexpected places. Stay creative!
